If you can't speak but can type and have access to the internet

22 April 2009, 10:10pm

INTERNET RELAY calls allow you to type what you want to say and read the messages from the other person on your computer or on some mobile phones.

Equipment

To make internet relay calls you need a computer or laptop with an internet connection - see more.

Using a computer you can make calls directly from the NRS website - see more. You can even make a call now.

Or you can make calls via instant messenger - see more.

If you have problems making internet relay calls from your computer see our troubleshooting FAQs.

You can use some mobile phones to make an internet relay call - see more.

If you find it hard to type

If you have difficulty typing on a standard computer you can use a combination of the following to make NRS calls:

  • an extra-large keyboard to make it easier to see and type
  • a different-shaped or sized mouse to make it easier to move the cursor
  • a larger screen, or software to magnify what you see on screen
  • special computer access options for controlling your computer using only small movements of your head, hand, arm, foot or even eyes.

Big key keyboard - the larger keys are easier to see and press

If you use a voice output device which connects to a computer or has built-in internet access you might be able to make NRS calls directly from your device.

If you know someone who can help you with specialised technology, talk to them to get more information on devices to suit you.

Or see the details of specialised technology people or organisations in your area who can help you find this equipment. They may also be able to help you find out if there is funding assistance available for the equipment.

You should note that special computer access options are not available through the subsidised disability equipment programs run by phone companies.

Caller profiles

You can't set up a caller profile for internet relay.

This means that the relay officer will not know if you are a slow typist or have other special requirements. If this is a problem, you might like to prepare a message saying "I'm a slow typist, please ask the caller to be patient" or something similar.

You can either cut and paste this from a word processing document or use a macro option on your computer software to enter it into the internet relay message window.

Please talk to our Helpdesk if you need more information.

Training

We can give you step-by-step instructions over the phone or in your own home if requested. See more.
