Making a relay call with a mobile phone

If you can connect to the internet with your phone, you may be able to make an internet relay call.

You will need a mobile phone:

  • with an internet connection
  • that uses Windows operating system - you call tell by the Windows logo in the top left corner of the screen.

While at present not all Windows phones are compatible with internet relay, we know that you can make internet relay calls with the range of Hiptop mobile phones distributed by Telstra.

We are working with manufacturers and suppliers to try and increase the ranges of other phones that are compatible. But if you are buying a phone, particularly to make internet relay calls, you will need to test it before you buy.

Bear in mind that mobile phone technology is a rapidly moving field. There are new models appearing all the time, so it is always a good idea to check around and also check user forums on the web.

If you haven't connected to the internet before, you might need to first open an internet account with your phone provider.

It is better to use instant messaging such as MNS or AOL to make an internet relay call on your mobile rather than use the NRS website.

If you don't already have MSN or AOL installed on your phone, you can download them for free. (Do a Google search on ‘MSN download' or ‘AOL download'.)
